Advice on packing when moving home

Moving home can be stressful, but you can reduce hiccups from occurring by packing your belongings as safely and securely as possible. Here’s all you need to know.

Order packing supplies

Make sure you’ve got sufficient packing supplies. As well as boxes, you’ll need packing tape, bubble wrap and a marker to label containers. Don’t just use any old cardboard box – they must be strong and sturdy enough to keep the contents safe and secure.

CWraight Removals can provide you with packing supplies and also offer a full packing service which will take the stress out of your removal and ensure your items are safely packed and transported by professionals.

Start as soon as possible

As soon as you’ve got a move date in the diary, start packing. You can never do this early enough. Start by boxing away items you won’t need, such as last season’s clothing or ornaments.

Don’t overload boxes

Avoid cramming things into boxes, as they may be too heavy to lift, or vulnerable to collapsing. As a rough guide, boxes should weigh no more than about 20kg. Secure the bottom with extra tape for peace of mind.

The right storage box

Not all belongings may be suitable for storage in the same type of box, so speak to your removals Kent company to find out what options they have for packing. Clothes, for example, are better suited to being packed in hanging wardrobe boxes or using specialist clothing rails.

Even packing

Store the heaviest items at the bottom of the box, and the lightest things near the top. So that items don’t move around, fill empty spaces with soft cushions or towels. Wrap delicate items in bubble wrap and secure against soft items for extra cushioning protection.

Organised packing

With domestic removal, you’ll save a lot of time if you organise your packing by room, so that items from one place are all kept together. This makes it much easier when you unpack once you’ve moved. Don’t forget to label the front of boxes, so you know what’s inside, and which room the box belongs to.

Secure boxes

Once you’ve filled your boxes, secure them firmly with tape and make sure that they aren’t too heavy to lift. Pack a box with essential items that you’ll need upon arrival, such as cutlery, toilet roll, cups, a tea towel and the kettle.
