All boxed up – Moving a Franciscan Library

Taking on challenging London removals is all part of a day’s work at C. Wraight Removals Kent. As a and Kent and London removal company, we work with a huge range of clients. A recent project saw us take on an international move for a Franciscan Study Centre. Based in Canterbury, Kent, their entire study library needed to be packed into two shipping containers and shipped to Africa. When the centre asked for our help, we couldn’t wait to get started! Moving libraries is something we’ve done before, and this one certainly won’t be our last!

Assessing the task in hand

As with every job, a full assessment was made to confirm requirements and logistics. Meeting with Friar Anthony and his colleagues at the centre in Canterbury was a real highlight. This job was our first working with friars and they were great guys with an inspirational ethos to help others.

After a tour of the site and library, Friar Anthony explained that the thousands of books being packed were going to Zambia and Zimbabwe. All needed to be packed in order before being loaded onto the correct shipping container, one for each destination. With all the information we needed to hand, a timescale was set and our quote accepted. The next job was to set a date for the mammoth task ahead.

The job begins

Day one began with the delivery of packing boxes and materials. With such a huge quantity of books being packed, this alone took two vehicles to transport. Next, the team were briefed, ensuring each staff member had clear expectations of what was required. Packing the books required complete concentration and the meticulous expertise C. Wraight Removals London and Kent are renowned for. Working in teams, the packers spent four days making up boxes, reading out reference codes and arranging the books accordingly.

With everything packed and referenced on time, we began loading the containers. As with all jobs of this scale, time pressures can cost money. The delivery of each container left us a three-hour window to fill it. Our efficient and skilled team made short work of the boxes, managing to load two containers in under four hours. All of this was done from a library located upstairs, but this didn’t faze our team. We think a world record may have been broken somewhere along the line!

On to pastures new

Friar Anthony had the honour of putting the last box on the container, bringing a huge and tough operation to a close. Since completing the library move, we have undertaken other moves for the Franciscan Centre. Their archives have been relocated to Manchester and the remainder of their items are in our own storage, ready for delivery to a new centre in Essex in the future.

The key to this job was planning and organisation. We gathered all the information needed to ensure the move went smoothly while working closely with the clients and treating their goods with respect.
